The Queen of Luxuria was born in 2008 at Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, UK. The Queen of Luxuria interviews the public and writes poetry inspired by those experiences. The work addresses important questions of our time through a poetic lens that is often philosophical in form and reflects the complexity of what it means to be human. She is interested in the dialogic exchange, thinking about how language shapes and defines our cultural identities. The translation of personal stories into poetic form creates moments of epiphany for participants. How can language become a form of liberation? How has our socialized patterns of speech impacted societal oppression and in utilizing a feminist methodology how can we as diverse communities emancipate ourselves? These theoretical concerns for language, spoken dialect, and the structure of speech are influenced by her Scottish heritage. The Queen of Luxuria was artist in residence for Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in 2014 devising six interactive performances in Chicago, USA. In 2015 she was commissioned to create Neighborhood Magic for Beverly, Chicago interviewing eight residents over the age of seventy about their life stories. She continued to work with Beverly in 2016 creating an interactive public art installation in the garden of Ridge Historical Society. In 2016 she was invited to the City of Lucerne, Switzerland to start Spare Rib Revisited that she has continued to develop in Liverpool, UK and will produce in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2018. She creates ensemble and solo performances and has screened, performed and exhibited in Africa, Europe and the USA.
